Referral
Obesity surgery is not to be entered into lightly. It requires a
considerable degree of commitment on your part and the skills of a
specialist in obesity surgery (also known as a bariatric surgeon).
However, if you think that surgery could be a good option for you, the
next step is to discuss it with your GP. They will make arrangements
for you to see a bariatric surgeon. Be patient because your GP may know
less about this treatment than you do, as it is not yet widely
available in the UK!
A GP referral should be provided whether you are seeking surgery as an NHS patient, or privately.
Some surgeons provide a referral questionnaire for GPs in their area
to help identify the patients for whom this surgery would be most
beneficial. Click here to download the BOSPA referral questionnaire.
To view the questionnaire your will need Acrobat reader. If you do not have this already installed on your computer, click here to downloaded it free of charge.
